s.pneumoniae vs. viridans streptococci

Some strains of S.pneumoniae are morphologically indistinguishable from those of viridans streptococci. Streptococcus pneumoniae unlike other viridans streptococci are sesnsitive to optochin (ethylhydrocupreine hydrochloride) - see here - and its colonies are lysed in presence of sodium desoxycholate (bile salts) - see here.
